Fred Pearce's The Coming Population Crash is simultaneously clear, well written, informed, and informative-but also, especially in its historical sections, somewhat unsatisfying. In the final two thirds of the book, Pearce offers a very readable and useful overview of current demographic patterns: fertility decline within Europe, gender and reproductive patterns in the developing world, global migration, urbanization, and population and resource issues. In addressing the latter issues, the most environmental of this part of the book, Pearce emphasizes contingency and optimism.
