Civilizing the Wilderness: Culture and Nature in Pre-Confederation Canada and Rupert's Land

In this collection of eleven essays, A.A. den Otter explains how "civilization" and "wilderness" were understood by British North Americans and Aboriginal and Metis peoples living in Rupert's Land (the Hudson Bay drainage area). As well, he convincingly casts these latter indigenous groups as active agents engaged in the transformative processes that touched this region, especially during the first half of the nineteenth century.
