British and Irish MEPs clashed with Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou in the debate on pesticides this week, arguing the trialogue deal would push up food prices and give imports an unfair advantage over EU producers.rnMany MEPs speaking in the two hour debate at the Plenary in Strasbourg on Monday evening supported the compromise agreed between the Council, the Commission and the European Parliament, saying it is a balanced approach, and the deal was voted through by a large majority the following day.rnBut there was consistent criticism from British and Irish MEPs who called for an impact assessment to establish which pesticides would disappear and what the impact would be on farmers; a clear definition of endocrine disrupters and, most importantly, action over conditions for imports.
