UNEP says 'close the gap' before Doha conference

Action on climate change must be stepped up for the world to have a chance of keeping a global average temperature rise below 2 degrees this century, a major United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report warned last week. The Emissions Gap Report, released just days before the meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Doha, Qatar, shows that greenhouse gas emissions levels are now around 14 per cent more than they need to be in 2020. Instead of declining, concentration of warming gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) is actually increasing in the atmosphere - up around 20 per cent since 2000.
