The number of serious industrial pollution incidents in Great Britain declined to 540 in 2009, down by just over half since 2004. Although evolving industrial patterns could be a factor, this is above all a testament to improved controls and a sustainability success story. Most pollution incidents have historically occurred as the result of accidents due to management mistakes.
