Defining strategic leadership

Most people have some views on leadership. Generally whenever leadership is mentioned, people think of historic leaders with their heroic qualities who led their people through times of acute adversity. They are the visionary leaders. They are rare. I want to distinguish them from other leaders, the more common variety, such as those found among the chief executives, army chiefs, school principals, captains of sporting teams, heads of local clubs and myriad other social organisations. When we examine the individuals who we would class as leaders, there are some common characteristics such as integrity, courage, and an ability to inspire, to take decisions and bear responsibility. Each of these leaders has his or her unique approach derived from their unique personal characteristics and the circumstances of their erstwhile life, and the environment in which they operate.
