Learning to take risks

Recently I watched the repeat of the excellent series Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. "The wealth of inspiration and energy of the 19th century was the catalyst for the huge progress that marked the 20th century". Visionary and brilliant - but these iconic engineering feats sometimes came at a devastating cost to their builders. Sometimes they were not immediately commercially viable. Using today's standards, the risks to human safety were too high and I suspect that contemporary financiers would have run in the opposite direction.
