Mining industry leaders from all parts of Australia and New Zealand have paid a moving tribute to the 29 miners who died at the Pike River coal mine on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island.rnIn his opening address to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) New Zealand Branch conference in Auckland in late November, chairman of the New Zealand Branch of AusIMM Cam Wylie said: "I think of the men who have tragically lost their lives underground, of their families, of thernmen and women in the rescue attempt, of everybody involved. I am deeply affected, I am sad, and my thoughts are with all of those people at this time."rnSeparately, AusIMM president Greg Chalmers extended the institute's support and condolences to the families and friends of the 29 miners and to the rescue and emergency services teams at the mine.
