In 1915 when our firm was founded, there was a staff of two. Both were engineers, and the first work done by Gannett Fleming was largely in the field of water supply. Our first assignment was to visit Erie, PA, on August 4, 1915, and write an article on the disastrous flood that swept through the heart of town the previous day, killing more than 80 people. Our client, coincidentally, was Engineering Record magazine. This job marked the successful beginning of Gannett Fleming, as it led to our designing and supervising construction of a new $2-million dam.
