Massive Truss Bridge Installed in Eight Hours

According to the Chicago Dept. of Transportation, ironworkers broke a record with the Torrence Avenue railroad truss bridge, which is believed to be the largest bridge of its kind ever assembled, then moved into place. Ironworkers from Local 1, Chicago, assembled the massive, 400-ft-long, 4.3-million-lb bridge over the course of four months. "Not only did they complete the project on schedule, they did it a whole week early," says Walter Wise, general president of the Iron Workers Union. Wise serves as labor co-chairman of the Ironworker Management Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (IMPACT).
