FMI's 2017 Construction Outlook forecasts a steady 5% growth in the power and energy market in 2017. FMI analysts further noted that power companies are placing greater emphasis on "flexibility to respond to peak needs alongside hydropower, solar and wind-generating facilities." Much of the industry growth is expected to be in U.S. coal exports, which will contribute to a 5% increase in coal production in 2017, according to the Energy Information Agency (EIA). As well, EIA notes that wind energy capacity at the end of 2016 was 81 GW, which is expected to climb to 102 GW by the end of 2018, while total utility-scale solar generation capacity will increase by 48% from 21 GW at the end of 2016 to 32 GW by the end of 2018.
