Escalators: Handling Capacity and Passenger Loads

The incorrect rating of the actual handling capacity and passenger load of the escalators threatens an overload of a transport terminal, by chaos and crowding at an entrance landing, lowers a safety threshold of passengers and increases sizes and metal consumption of an escalator, its cost and power consumption. For example, taking into account nominal safety factors, each extra kilogram of mass of one running meter of a staircase or of distributed passenger load requires an increase in the braking load of the step chain by approximately 1300 N for an escalator with a 65-meter rise.
