This soft-cover book comprises 10 chapters with appendices, bibliographical references, and an index. The book is comprehensive in scope, investigating the applied side of librarianship and libraries. While it emphasizes the library environment in the United States, it is broad enough in its approach to apply to most library settings. According to the authors, the book is a resource that can be used for ongoing professional development, on-the-job reference, or for LIS students who may not be familiar with the library environment. A very practical, hands-on approach is taken with lists of references, suggested resources, and sometimes study questions found at the end of every chapter. The index is comprehensive and helpful. These features are very useful for independent study. Furthermore, the book answers many of the questions about library-related work I receive from my new students in my introductory class, explaining why LIS education is at the graduate level, while recognizing that in practice, sometimes there may not be much difference between the duties performed by a paraprofessional and those of a professional librarian.
