After 213 years as a member-owned in-stitution, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) became a listed company on March 8th. Despite the celebratory mood, the day's opening bell might have tolled sombrely for traders on the exchange floor. A day earlier the world's biggest stock exchange had completed a merger with Archipelago, an all-electronic trading network. The new entity (to be known as NYSE Group) is a child of the electronic age. The floor traders' days may be numbered.
