Sir: What an interesting article the one on Retford was in your May 2021 edition. Having been involved in the high speed programme for the East Coast main line in the 1970s, I was invited to give a talk at the National Railway Museum on the work involved in speeding up the route, part of which included the work to remove the flat crossing at Retford and the subsequent slewing of the GN main through the station area, work which included removal of almost two-thirds of the down island platform. The slides from that talk are attached and you (or your readers) may find them interesting. It is also interesting to note that even with all that realignment work, and the removal of the flat crossings, the best speed we could achieve through the station was 115mph, this being due to the transition curve limitations at the ends.
