Sir: With regard to the 'LNER Pacifics on the Southern' article by Andrew Wilson on page 53 of the January 2020 issue of Steam Days, I thought you and your readers might be interested to see the attached Southern Region typed Special Notice dated 9 June 1948, the original of which is in the Bluebell Railway and Southern Archive. Thank you. This item is now also relevant to the November 2020 article on 'The 1948 Locomotive Exchanges - The express classes', also by Andrew Wilson. The text of that feature reveals that No 33 'Seagull' ran hot at Andover on a preliminary run on 31 May and was replaced by No E22 'Mallard', which was sent from King's Cross Loco. However, No E22 'Mallard' itself ran hot when working the up test train on Wednesday, 9 June, which was terminated at Salisbury. The documentation is thus the unexpected move of the repaired No 33 'Seagull' to Nine Elms in readiness to work the following day's down 'Atlantic Coast Express' through to Exeter (Central) complete with the ex-GWR dynamometer car.
