Established with the Border Union Railway (BUR) from Hawick to Carlisle and in use for the 1 July 1862 opening of that line, by the 1923 grouping Carlisle Canal was by far the largest of the London & North Eastern Railway sheds in the greater Carlisle area. By the end of 1930 there were six sheds subordinate to Canal - Alston, Carlisle London Road, Langholm, Longtown, Port Carlisle and Silloth - with only Alston and Silloth officially still open in the British Railways era, although some servicing was also being undertaken at London Road through to 1963. Of these, Carlisle London Road and Alston had North Eastern Railway heritage, the others being ex-North British Railway.
