When you consider the LNER, the East Coast main line between London and Scotland may well provide the glamour, but the railways and operations elsewhere are far more indicative of the company as a whole and none more so than the network of lines in north Lincolnshire ostensibly built by the Great Northern and Great Central railways. These books are designed to complement the author's previous historical work The Railways Around Grimsby, for when considering what to include in that, the smaller details were often omitted or glossed over to achieve clarity but are worthy of further study which is what these books aim to provide. Part One begins with an enthusiast's view of the locomotive sheds at Immingham and Grimsby with dated observations and tales of 'bunking' the sheds. This provides a very agreeable entry to the chapters that follow, which take a more historical approach to the locomotive sheds at Louth and Mablethorpe, Barnetby and New Holland, and the big sheds at Grimsby and Immingham. All are supported by maps and a wide selection of images of the infrastructure, engines and people involved from across the eras. Snapshot allocations are given for a variety of dates and locomotive types are covered with details of the sort of work the engines undertook. This even includes one of the Great Central American-built class '15' engines, railmotors and diesels of the later steam era. The word 'thorough' comes to mind. Appendices follow which cover CME's and Locomotive Superintendents, railway abbreviations, shed codes in allocation analysis, shed and depot locations, named locomotives and an allocation summary by depot and by class with arrival and departure dates.
