Craticula buderi (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot wasestablished by Hustedt in 1954 as Navicula buderi,after which this diatom was transferred to thegenus Craticula by Lange-Bertalot (Rumrich et al.2000). I found several specimens of C. buderi inthe Chech?o River in southern Poland during diatomologicalstudies of this area. Craticula buderiis known from North America (USA; e.g., Bahls2009), South America (Colombia; e.g., Montoya-Moreno et al. 2013), Australia (Queensland) andNew Zealand (Bostock & Holland 2010), and theMiddle East (Israel; Tsarenko et al. 2000). In theArctic it is known from Ellesmere Island (Micheluttiet al. 2013), and in Europe from GreatBritain (Hartley et al. 1986), Germany (Hofmannet al. 2013) and Romania (C?r?u? 2012). Thisdiatom is widespread in Central Europe, whereit is known from water of high calcium contentand moderate to higher electric conductivity, includingsaline water (Lange-Bertalot 2001; B?ket al. 2012; Pliński & Witkowski 2013). Previouslythe species was reported only from two localitiesin northern and central Poland (Dziengo 2003;?elazna-Wieczorek 2011; Fig. 1). There is littlepublished data on the distribution of C. buderi inPoland. For the diatom names regarded as synonymsof Craticula buderi (Navicula pseudohalophilaCholnoky 1960, Navicula adsidua R. E. M.Archibald 1971) I found no information on theirdistribution in Poland. Other Navicula species similarto Craticula buderi [Navicula simplex Krasske,N. halophila (Grunow) Cleve] are known from Poland(Siemińska & Wo?owski 2003). Navicula simplexKrasske is known from the Baltic coastal zone(Rumek 1948; Mańkowski & Rumek 1975; Ringer1985), the Mazurian area (Chudyba 1979), the VistulaRiver near Warsaw (Wysocka 1952; Tyszka--Mackiewicz 1983) and a fish pond in Mydlnikinear Kraków (Siemińska 1947). The last diatomthat can be mistaken for Craticula buderi is Naviculahalophila [= Craticula halophila (Grunowex Van Heurck) Mann]. Craticula buderi was regardedas a synonym of Navicula halophila byKrammer and Lange-Bertalot (1986). Now thesetwo species are treated as separate taxa, Craticulabuderi and C. halophila, which differ considerablyin valve shape and size (Lange-Bertalot 2001).Craticula halophila is well known from salinesprings and waters of high to very high electrolytecontent.
