Pollution atmosphérique, climat et société?: quelle place aujourd’hui dans la ??ville durable???? Une analyse comparée à partir de la littérature francophone et anglophone

The air/climate/society issue is currently characterized both by its crosscutting dimension (the pollutants altering air quality and accounting for greenhouse gas emissions are often the same) and its multi-scale dimension (from the scale of housing to the global scale). This paper uses a social science approach to elaborate on this premise by questioning the place of these issues within the repertoire of the “sustainable city”, whose influence on ways of making and experiencing the city is growing.We look at questions often primarily perceived as technical (such as the measurement of air pollution) with an effort to account for their social thickness, both from the angle of public policy and from the angle of urban lifestyles. We rely on a comparative bibliometrics methodology, based on a corpus of 18 French- and English-language scientific journals. We conducted statistical analysis using the free software IRaMuTeQ to evidence lexical co-occurrences. This analysis highlights three key languages in conceptual, critical and more applied approaches to urban sustainability: climate change and its models, mobility and urban transportation, and the urban metabolism in relation to energy consumption and material flows. Theoretical and practical dimensions make sense together, as is shown by the strength of the ties between the recurring terms, lexical classes and significant segments identified.
