Regularización de la Prostitución: ?Avance o Retroceso en la Construcción de la Igualdad de Género? Un Estudio de Caso en Brasil

Prostitution is secularly a polemic issue, and is closely connected with gender and class’s inequalities.In this paper, we analyze prostitutes’ social representations about the regulation of prostitution and we discuss the implications of this regulation in the construction of gender equality, our discussion is based on ethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews with women who exercise prostitution in a country town of S?o Paulo (Brazil).The results indicated that the insertion in prostitution wasn’t considerate as a free choice, but as a need to ensure their survival.Generally, prostitution and it’s regulation were associated with negative content of meanings.The regulation of prostitution was seen as an obstacle to the possibility of improvement of their living conditions and to the construction of gender equality.
