Abstract Vegetable oil wraps containing DPA (1.5 mg per 100 in.2 of paper) will virtually eliminate superficial scald from long-stored Sturmer apples without causing secondary damage. Of the oils tested, maize oil had the best economic and physical properties as a carrier for DPA when this material is to be used on apples susceptible to mineral oil damage. Commercial tests confirmed these results, and maize oil/DPA wraps have been adopted for regular use on Sturmer grown in scald-susceptible areas.
