The Seventeenth International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-17) was held October 11th–16th, 2015, at the Eurogress Aachen, Germany. This biennial conference is the major international forum for information exchange on materials to be used in future fusion power systems. ICFRM-17 assembled again the world community in the related scientific fields to exchange and discuss the latest results on research, development, and deployment of materials for ITER, other near-term experimental plasma devices and long- term fusion power reactors. More than 30 years of focused materials research and development for fusion applications have established a substantial technology base in support of the realization of fusion as an energy source. The ongoing construction of the first burning plasma experiment, ITER, in France has increased the international attention on this research field. The technologies to exploit fusion energy are rapidly maturing, and recent progress in research devoted to fusion reactor materials is a major contributor to this effort. In addition, materials research for fusion continues to be at the forefront of materials science.
