A'WOT METHOD IN DETERMINATION OF SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES TOWARDS OPEN GREEN AREAS IN THE MEDIUM SIZED CITIES: THE CASE OF NIGDE, TURKEY

Due to the population growth and technological development in the world, cities are growing fastly. Along with this growth in the cities, the open-green areas of the cities decrease or even disappear over time. In this context, spatial plans (spatial strategy plans, environmental plans and development plans) need to be prepared in line with the sustainable strategic targets determined for the protection of urban open-green areas. The aim of the study is to reveal sustainable strategic targets for the open green areas of Ni?de city, which is one of the medium-sized cities through the A'WOT method using the SWOT analysis offering qualitative (verbal) data and AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). Within this scope, the factors related to SWOT groups for Ni?de city are determined from interviews with municipal and other public institutions, approved development plan and plan reports, observations made after field studies, interviews with experts and information obtained from the literature. Among the factors related to SWOT groups for the planning of open green areas, a survey was conducted with experts to determine the order of priority. As a result of synthesizing the results of the analysis in a holistic approach, sustainable strategic targets have been determined for the planning of open green areas in order to ensure the adequate level of the open green areas which are the social needs of the individuals with urban development, and to minimize the harm to the natural and cultural structure.
