In the present communication a novel method is presented to derive thealtitude profile of Brunt-V?is?l? period from the ascent rateprofile of sounding balloons. The basic premise of the present method isthat the oscillations in the ascent rate of the balloon will have thesignature of Brunt-V?is?l? frequency, which can be retrieved byusing sophisticated spectral tools. We employ wavelet transforms to arriveat the Brunt-V?is?l? period profile. Comparison of retrievedBrunt-V?is?l? periods with the values derived from thetemperature data available from the same radiosonde ascent shows goodagreement. Retrieving the atmospheric temperature from the height profile ofBrunt-V?is?l? period is also discussed in the presentcommunication. We have shown that it is possible to estimate theBrunt-V?is?l? period and temperature profiles from therawinsonde ascent rate data alone where temperature sounding is notavailable.
