This useful little work is the first such directory published by any of the Regional Medical Libraries (RMLs) since they first began operating in 1967. The Editor's Introduction provides a policy statement on the Midwest Regional Medical Library and its services. Although regional medical libraries have many goals (reference and bibliographic assistance, automatic referral of unfilled requests, MEDLARS searches, education, consultation, and advice) "the most extensive service consists of the lending of books and, in the case of journal articles, the supplying of single free copies." (And, rightly or wrongly, it is by the ability of RMLs to deliver documents that the RML Program will be judged successful or otherwise. Beauty contestants are not judged on their potential as mothers; the fact that RMLs may foster a whole family of community hospital libraries in their regions may well be overlooked.) Mrs. Moreland's introduction reiterates the frequently ignored point that Regional Medical Library Service is to supplement rather than supplant the services of the existing health science libraries. With this in mind, she sets out to identify and locate the health science resources in the five-state area.
