Winter 2014: More Than We Bargained For

The last week of January and the second week in February presented the Eastern United States with some of the worse winter weather seen in decades. Normally, those of us in South Carolina, and indeed much of the South, sit smugly by and watch it happen to someone else. Unfortunately, this year we were not sc lucky. The implosion of the Atlanta area highway network was well chronicled in the media, but we in Charleston suffered a similar, if less traumatic, shutdown oi our roads and bridges as well. The Ravenel Bridge, which opened in 2005, carries US 17 across the Cooper River, connecting the large suburb of Mounl Pleasant on the north with Charleston on the south.
