Do Business Schools Have a Role in the Current Financial Crisis?

In September 2008,I attended a meeting of college deans at my university to discuss the role of each college in implementing the university's strategic priorities. When it was my turn to speak, instead of being asked about the business school's strategic plan, I was asked by my fellow deans to discuss what we were planning to do in light of the current turmoil in the financial markets. At that time, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke had just presented to Congress a proposal for a massive $700 billion bailout of the financial industry. The proposal was met with widespread skepticism by lawmakers, given the vagueness of the three-page plan (Kirchhoff, Hagenbaugh, & Davidson, 2008).
