It comes as no surprise that although we need to continue to sequence genomes and to identify individual proteins involved in a biological response, the ultimate challenge will be to make sense of the enormous amount of data generated and to convert this into a dynamic picture of the whole organism at any given point. The complexity of this undertaking requires the interaction of all segments of the scientific community — from mathematicians and engineers to chemists and biologists. It is the remarkable combination of formerly unfathomable computing power, enhanced imaging techniques and manipulation of biological and chemical molecules that allows us to extract information from subcellular biochemistry all the way to whole animals to complete the picture.
