This month, we start with an email from Jim Reagan, WOCHL. Jim wrote to tell me about a project using an Arduino and the Silicon Labs Si4735 chip (a single-chip solution for receiving AM, FM, and shortwave radio. With a bit of hacking, it even supports single sideband [SSB] -AL). There are a number of projects on the web using this chip; the one from Jim (Photos A and B, Figure 1) relies on the work of Ricardo Lima Caratti, PU2CLR . There is a Facebook group, "Si47XX for Radio Experimenters," which supports this and similar projects. Hackaday also has an article on a similar project "Multi-Band Receiver On A Chip Controlled By Arduino" by Tom Nardi. Using an Arduino and an OLED display, it is an inexpensive way to have a multi-function radio. The biggest expense is the Si4735 chip (approximately $8 to $18 through a variety of vendors).
