Even if you're an experienced truck-crane buyer, a review of the basics may be helpful. While larger all-terrain cranes con-tinue to gain popularity, many crane-rental firms running "taxi" fleets, that is, highly mobile cranes that zip between multiple jobs in a single day, still prefer hydraulic truck cranes in lift sizes less than 100 tons. Unless the all-terrain's added traction and maneuverability are consistently needed, a comparably sized hydraulic truck usually costs less to buy and less to operate than an all-terrain, simply because it has a generally simpler design. In some instances, the truck crane also weighs less, making it easier and less costly to mobilize, and truck cranes usually are faster on the road.
