I would like to make some observations as a practicing contractor's engineer in the UK. My first and over-riding point is that the papers give expression to underlying issues that many are aware of but lack language or impetus to express. The identification of the 10 model types of the 'central role' paper is enormously helpful, and every young engineer should have to learn to recite them and be able to discuss their characteristics and uses. Older engineers should be obliged to hold the habit of mind that they identify the model they are relying on, and bring to the fore in their thinking its limitations in any proposal they make.
