When one reads a paper by Elms or Brown (or even better, something jointly authored), one knows they can expect something cogent, concise, and beautifully written. This set of papers, by these two authoritative scholars, presents a compelling, informed, thoughtful, and thought-provoking assessment of the roles of models (both fundamental and complex) and responsibilities (of both individual and organisational stakeholders) in professional engineering decision-making. The authors rely on their extensive careers spanning professional engineering, design, consulting, and higher education, and their capacities for weaving technical and philosophical discussion, in preparing this set of papers. I have no doubt these papers will become required reading for many university courses in the fields of structural engineering, risk analysis, and engineering decision.
