Derivatization on Solid Supports: An Alternative Method for Solution Derivatization of Amines in Several Matrices

The potential of different methodologies for amine derivatization and sample treatment is illustrated. Alkyl and arylalkylamines have been used as model compounds. The various methods involve analyte purification, enrichment and derivatization, and several matrices have been employed. Different modes to carry out solution derivatization and derivatization on solid sorbents have been discussed, for off-line and on-line procedures. These methodologies have been compared in terms of their instrumental requirements, selectivity, sensitivity, linearity and reproducibility. The results obtained show that amine derivatization on solid supports is a good alternative to conventional solution derivatization. Amongst the advantages with regard to the conventional technique are: a simpler handling of samples, time savings, a better selectivity and stability of the reaction products and sample enrichment. Derivatization on solid supports has similar sensitivity than that achieved by solution derivatization, but it allows pre-concentration of samples providing lower detection limits and the possibility of developing automatic on line procedures.
