RITA COLWELL TAKES NSF HELM

In about a year and half, in 2000, the National Science Foundation will be half a century old. Lectures, laser shows, and multimedia events are in the works for that time, when NSF will display before the public the wonder and pervasiveness of science. Leading the cheers will be NSF's new director, microbial ecologist Rita Colwell, most recently director of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, but as near as one can tell, born to be sitting where she sits now.
