Spain's Engineers Build A Paperless Process

Each year, Spain's government-chartered civil engineering society, the CICCP, approves more than 20 million documents. Mostly plans for such public works projects as dams, roads and bridges, these documents ultimately have to be stored, creating yet another expense for the Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. But CICCP has come up with a plan for cutting that mountain of paper down to size. Last year, CICCP, which has a membership of 20,000 engineers, began distributing smart cards and card readers that allow each engineer to digitally sign a blueprint when it is approved.
