All we really needed to know about tenure-track faculty positions we did not learn in graduate school

The day the Editor of The Canadian Geographer asked me (Valorie) to consider submitting a Viewpoint on a topic of my choosing was, well, one of those days. What I mean is that by mid-morning I was already questioning how I would finish all the things I needed to do that day, how to actually do these things, and how it was that some of them had actually gotten onto my list of things to do in the first place. In response to the Editor's request, the first thing I jokingly said was that the only thing I could possibly think of writing about was on what I wished I had learned in graduate school. I was not being particularly serious. It was simply what was on my mind at the time. The Editor responded positively, though, and suggested that I nurture the idea. But, really, why would anyone care about what / had wished / had learned more about in my graduate school days? That sounded like a particularly selfish Viewpoint.
