摘要

Edmonton is as far north as the annual CSCE conference circuit usually travels and holding the event in the city presents an opportunity to highlight civil engineering history in northern Alberta and points beyond. The civil engineering history of this region goes back more than 200 years to the construction of forts and trading posts. For about 70 years, Edmonton has been formally recognized as the Gateway to the North, since it became an expediting hub for the Alaska Highway (dedicated as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1996) and the Canol pipeline in 1942.
