For those of us who divide our perception of British bus manufacturers between those that dominated the market before deregulation and those that have arisen since then, it's hard to think of Optare as anything other than a new company. Yet it will be 20 years old on 15 February next year. Over that time, it has developed 11 new products and has turned itself from a bodybuilder into a manufacturer of complete vehicles. Five of those products — CityPacer, StarRider, MetroRider, Solo and Alero — have been mini/midibuses, five — Delta, Vecta, Sigma, Prisma and Excel — have been larger single-deckers and the Spectra its sole double-decker.
