It was the best of times, those days last fall when we zipped through Oregon, from Portland to Newberry Volcano and back. What a route Dave Blackwell and Duncan Foley chose, cresting volcanic hummocks and blasting through emerald green forests, bypassing plaid flannel shirts. We visited Mt. Hood's Timberline Lodge, lunched at Smith Rock State Park, climbed the last 10 feet of Paulina Peak (7,984 feet high), walked the Big Obsidian Flow, viewed mountains from a basalt observatory, and talked EGS with AltaRock.
