In the 1980's the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) proposed to build a new power unit, Geysers Unit 21, which would have been the largest single geothermal power unit in the world if put into service. An order was placed by PG&E for the power generating equipment with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). The turbine was designed and constructed using the same approach as MHI had used on the 70 MW SMUDGEO #1 power plant that was put into commercial operation at The Geysers in December 1983; however, the PG&E Geysers Unit 21 was designed to have a power rating about twice as large as SMUDGEO #1, namely, 150 MW. Identical layouts would be used for the two units: a tandem-compound 4-flow machine with six stages of nozzles/blades in each side of two double-flow steam turbines.
