摘要

Paul scott is very proud of his work "Nothing I've been involved in has ever been as challenging as this," he says, gesturing at the completed concrete structure of Zaha Hadid's ?23m science centre in Wolfsburg, Germany. As the structural engineer on one of the most complicated structures ever built, Scott -a director of engineer Adams Kara Taylor -has every right to feel smug. Two years ago, when work started on site site, the challenges seemed almost insurmountable. Now, Scott's work here is nearly done. The centre's vast concrete structure, which is more like a giant Henry Moore sculpture than an exhibition building, rises up from a triangular plot next to the city's railway station. The building consists of an asymmetrical concrete box, which will house the exhibition space, held 7 m above ground on 10, irregularly shaped, conical legs. As well as giving access to the first floor exhibition space, these cones also house cafes, bars shops and even an auditorium.
