EH forces rethink of British Museum plans

Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners' plan for a major new exhibition space at the British Museum has been delayed following a row with English Heritage.rnSenior partner at the practice Graham Stirk, was due to give details of the 10,000sq m extension at a lecture last week, but unsuccessfully tried to cancel the event after EH raised objections to the proposals.rnPhilip Davies, planning development director at English Heritage, told BD the museum had "raced ahead" with the scheme - which also includes office and conservation space -without justifying the demolition of a grade I listed book bindery and two replica Georgian buildings on the overall grade I listed site.rn"To secure consent to demolish the bindery it needs to set out the criteria for the demolition of the buildings in [planning policy] PPG 15, and put forward arguments as to why that needs to happen - it didn't bother," he said.
