ATLANTIC CROSSING

It has now been 20 years since Rotterdam embarked on the redevelopment of Kop van Zuid, the dien recently vacated docks that lie on the south side of the River Maas. This was a period of rapid European integration and the explicit purpose of the 12Sha project was to ensure the city was well placed to capitalise on the opportunities presented by this shifting economic condition. Certainly, the construction of a new image for the city seems to have been as strong a driver as any immediate demand for additional housing and office space. Heavily bombed in the second world war, the city centre was the subject of extensive reconstruction in the post-war era but still presents a perforate and fragmentary character offering ample opportunities for a more piecemeal if less spectacular form of urban growth.
