Sileni Estates began 10 years ago as a greenfields development in Hawke's Bay. Owner Graeme Avery had contacted winemaker Grant Edmonds with regard to investing in a winery project to fulfil a long-standing ambition that he had nurtured. He turned to Edmonds because he had for a number of years enjoyed the Merlot-based reds that the winemaker had produced at Esk Valley Estate, one of the first New Zealand wineries to start taking Merlot seriously in the late 1980s.
