Australia began talking to the European Union about the possibility of a bilateral agreement on trade in wine nearly 20 years ago. A significant milestone was reached in December 2008 when Stephen Smith, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, signed the second version of a document initially agreed in 1993. The new Agreement represents a major step towards facilitating trade in wine between Australia and Europe.
