The Deterrent Effect of Accumulated Yellow Cards

In soccer, players who commit particularly aggressive fouls may be penalized with a yellow card. Players receiving two yellow cards in a match are immediately ejected. Moreover, in many leagues or tournaments, players who accumulate a sufficiently large number of yellow cards over multiple matches face a suspension in a later match. (What constitutes "sufficiently large" varies by league and tournament.) Presumably, this rule is intended to deter repeated instances of aggressive play.
