In the late 1960s the US started its Trident project - as American media claimed, in response to Russia's underwater Delta system. The US project consisted in development of a new solid fuel intercontinental ballistic missile and a new generation ballistic missile submarine with 20-24 missiles on board and increased stealthiness. This project, by its combat efficiency, should have had to significantly surpass the Russian 667BDR/D-9R whose serial production was planned since the mid-1970s. USSR political leaders asked our industry to "adequately react".
