This essay examines the archive created buy the poor law commissioners as a result of the Poor Law amendment act of 1834. Struggling to deal with the mountain of correspendence that resulted from its attempt to supervise local government across the whole of England and Wales, the commissioners invented new ways of keeping track of their records. The surviving archive provides a goldmine of information for historians interested in local and social history.
