Ben van berkel and Caroline bos founded United Network Studio (UNStudio) in 1988 with a focus on urban design and infrastructure. The firm has since expanded from Amsterdam, opening a satellite office in Shanghai in 2009, and its extended network of consultants has enabled it to tackle commissions in Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, the U.S., and elsewhere. For the Kutaisi International Airport (far left), completed in Georgia in 2013, UNStudio organized all of the airport's functions around two intersecting architectural details: the exterior detail, which acts as pavilion and gateway, and a transparent interior terminal space, which guides passenger flows. Singapore's Ardmore Residence (left), also finished this year, further demonstrates UNStudio's commitment to complex geometry.
